Since it is Web-scale Wednesday let’s start with a some Web-scale IT reading. I am hoping to have some time to attend at least part of the live online Nutanix Web-Scale IT event this morning.

Enter Web-scale IT “What is web-scale IT? Itโ€™s our effort to describe all of the things happening at large cloud services firms such as Google, Amazon, Rackspace, Netflix, Facebook, etc., that enables them to achieve extreme levels of service delivery as compared to many of their enterprise counterparts.”

A couple of Web-Scale IT Gartner articles Gartner Says By 2017 Web-Scale IT Will Be an Architectural Approach Found Operating in 50 Percent of Global Enterprises and the Web-scale IT making #1 on the Top 10 Strategic Technology Trends for 2014 are peaking the Web-scale IT interest.

The term “Web-scale IT” may have been fairly recent coined but the concept is nothing new – Web Scale article from 2007 by @lorcanD

Now on to some other interesting stuff…

OEM vendors offering Virtual SAN ready nodes – HP, Dell, Fujitsu, and Supermicro offering pre-configured nodes ready for VMware VSAN deployment. Just match the need with the node. Each offering provides specific capacity and compute. All the hardware in each pre-configured offering is on the VSAN HCL.

Anything about coffee and technology is sure to be an interesting read. Forget coffee, Starbucks is a tech company.

Working toward your VCDX? A lot of time will be spent preparing to defend your design but don’t forget about the Design and Troubleshooting scenarios that are also a part of the defense. 5 Reasons to Choose VMware vSphere 5.5 over Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V. I’ll add my own reason number 6 – VMware doesn’t suck. My opinion is that Hyper-V is still very clunky and overly complex – it has improved but it still has a long way to go. “However, if you’re selecting a hypervisor based on the absolute lowest cost, then you arenโ€™t making the smartest decision.” <- Love that!

Recently I was asked to review the book Disaster Recovery Using VMware vSphere Replication and vCenter Site Recovery Manager. I have not finished reading it yet, but so far it is pretty good. A full review will be posted once I finish it.
